Amman: The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the National Center for Agricultural Research, has launched two projects aimed at strengthening Jordan’s agricultural sector, ensuring food security, and improving farmers’ livelihoods.
According to Jordan News Agency, the first project focuses on preserving and improving the genetic makeup of local almond varieties. It involves documenting and analyzing strains threatened by climate change and developing new, more resilient, and economically viable varieties. Khaled Abu Hamour, Director General of the National Center for Agricultural Research, emphasized the project’s importance in safeguarding Jordan’s agricultural heritage and enhancing sustainability.
The second project aims to bolster the agricultural sector by enhancing farmers’ capacities and improving market access. It supports farmers through training, strengthening public-private partnerships, and facilitating new market opportunities via agricultural exhibitions that promote direct marketing. Mohammad Hayari, Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture, stated that these initiatives align with the ministry’s vision to empower farmers and boost their competitiveness in both local and international markets.
FAO Representative in Jordan, Nabil Assaf, highlighted that the projects represent a significant step toward a more resilient and sustainable agricultural sector. He reaffirmed FAO’s commitment to supporting Jordan’s agricultural and development goals. The announcement also provided a platform for dialogue among stakeholders, with the ministry and FAO reaffirming their continued collaboration to advance sustainable agricultural development and ensure the sector’s resilience amid climate and economic challenges.
