50,000 Sheep to Be Imported to Fulfill Ramadan Meat Demand

Amman: The Ministry of Agriculture has announced plans to import up to 50,000 heads of sheep to meet the demand for red meat during the holy month of Ramadan. This decision, as stated by Misbah Tarawneh, the Assistant Secretary-General for Animal Wealth, aims to alleviate the pressure on local female sheep slaughtering and to stabilize the rising local meat prices, which currently range between JD12 and JD15 per kilo.

According to Jordan News Agency, the sheep imports will adhere to a one-quarantine procedure in line with approved health conditions to ensure product safety and satisfy the domestic market’s needs during Ramadan and beyond. This measure is part of a broader strategy by the Ministry to support Jordan’s livestock industry.

In an effort to balance price and quantity, the Ministry has also reopened exports to the Arab Gulf countries. This move is designed to benefit both consumers and producers by maintaining an adequate supply of meat. The Ministry is also continuing its coordination efforts to ensure that food products are available in quantities that exceed market demand, aiming to provide these goods at accessible prices during Ramadan.
