Guterres: Plight of civilians in northern Gaza unbearable

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday that the plight of Palestinian civilians trapped in northern Gaza is unbearable.

He said in a statement that hundreds were killed and more than 60,000 were forced to flee again, many fear they will not return.

The UN Chief said he was shocked at the horrific scale of death, injury and destruction in the north, where civilians are trapped under the rubble, and the sick and wounded without life-saving health care.

He warned that postponement of the final phase of polio vaccination in northern Gaza puts the lives of thousands of children at risk.

Guterres stressed that the parties to the conflict must respect and protect civilians, including humanitarian workers and first responders, whose vital work must be facilitated and protected, not hindered or jeopardized.

He called, in the name of humanity, for an immediate ceasefire, the immediate release of all hostages, and accountability for crimes that are punishable under international law.
