Wadi rum: The 17th edition of the Wadi Rum Full Moon Ultra Marathon (FMUM) commenced with the participation of 495 runners from 46 countries, showcasing Jordan's increasing prominence on the global sports tourism map. The marathon highlights Wadi Rum's unique desert environment, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
According to Jordan News Agency, Dr. Thabet Nabulsi, Commissioner for Tourism and Youth Affairs at Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), emphasized that the race serves as an international platform to promote Jordan as a leading destination for adventure sports. He described the event as more than just a sporting competition, but an experience that integrates adventure with nature in the distinctive setting of Wadi Rum.
Dr. Nabulsi also highlighted the race's evolution since its inception in 2009, noting its growth into a global event that attracts participants from around the world. This growth contributes to promoting sustainable tourism and supporting local communities. During the ceremony, he honored Thomas Kinsley from Australia, the winner of the 50-kilometre men's race, and Anne Milligan from the USA, the winner of the women's race, along with the event's organizers and sponsors.
The marathon was organized by TREKS in cooperation with ASEZA and the Jordan Tourism Board. It featured four races: a 5-kilometre guided walk, a 10-kilometre desert run, a 21-kilometre half-marathon, and a 50-kilometre ultra-marathon, allowing participants to experience running in the desert under the moonlight.
