2 gov’t employees handed prison terms for embezzlement

Two public service employees at an undisclosed ministry were Monday convicted by the Amman Criminal Court on embezzlement charges, and were sentenced to five years in jail each with hard labour, a ruling that can be appealed to the competent court.

In a public session, presided over by judge Ahmad Omari and judges Marzouk Qallab as members, the court ordered one of the employees to return 19,638 dinars and the other 2,893 dinars, the value of the embezzled amounts, in addition to the fees.

But the sentence against the second employee was commuted to two and a half years for having returned the amount before the case moved to the court, which it saw as an extenuating factor.
