Minister of Education and Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Wajih Owais, on Thursday launched Jordan’s National Literacy Strategy at Queen Rania Al Abdullah Center For Educational & Informational Technology.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Owais said Ministry of Education worked with a number of partners, notably US Agency for International Development (USAID), British Foreign and Development Office (FCDO), and Queen Rania Foundation for Education and Development (QRF) to develop a national reading strategy that includes a clear action plan to improve students’ Arabic literacy skills over the next five years.

This process is in continuation of the ministry’s role in developing literacy skills, based on recommendations of a number of international studies on education in Jordan, he said.

Stressing importance of concerted and integrated national efforts to achieve national vision in reaching a literate generation, he said this strategy was built on four main pillars of school, family, media, and community, as the basis of the educational process.

He also stressed the need to continue training, motivating and providing teachers with the latest educational strategies to spur students to make reading a daily habit, as well as to create the appropriate school environment to achieve this end.

He expressed thanks to USAID, FCDO, and QRF and private sector’s representatives for their support to the strategy’s implementation.
