The agriculture ministry Wednesday said it will allow for meat imports from Georgia.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Minister of Agriculture Khaled Hneifat urged traders who desire to import meat to apply for an import license with the ministry, adding the ministry encourages those interested in importing meat provided there are no health issues and the imported sheep would not negatively impact the local market.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
Hneifat explained the decision was made following the approval of the ministry’s Animal Health Committee of a report on the animals’ health.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
The ministry insists that imported sheep breeds must not be similar to Jordan reared ones, he said, adding that in case traders want to import sheep from similar breeds, they must remove the tail fat after slaughtering the animal in the slaughterhouses recognised by the ministry.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
He said local meat production covers 38 percent of the local market’s needs, while 62 percent are imported, highlighting the diversity of imports offers consumers a higher quality with a competitive price.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
