WFP Calls for Urgent Funding to Help People in Libya

The World Food Program (WFP) has appealed urgent funding of at least $6.5 million to help 100,000 people affected by the floods and torrents in eastern Libya.

In a statement on Monday, the WFP indicated that it has provided 131 tons of food to 21,500 affected people in 11 areas in eastern Libya so far, despite the fragile situation on the ground.

The situation is still fragile in northeastern Libya, and there is an urgent need for food, water, shelter and health care, in addition to logistical support, to the survivors, including the displaced and homeless, the WFP stressed.

Unprecedented torrents and floods struck the eastern region of Libya on Sept. 10, leaving thousands of victims and destroying buildings and property. The Libyan authorities declared all municipalities that were exposed to the torrential rains “disaster areas”.
