Water ministry, USAID sign agreement to carry out water projects

Minister of Water and Irrigation, Mohammed Al-Najjar, attended Thursday, with a delegation from Water Resources and Environment Office at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), headed by Andrew Letkin and Deputy Director Veronica Lee, the signing ceremony of an agreement to rehabilitate water networks in the central regions of Mahes and Fuheis in the Balqa governorate and improve efficiency of water treatment units in the Zara – Ma’in plant, at a cost of $22 million.

According to a press statement, the ministry said the agreement, funded by the USAID, within a four-year package, was signed by its Secretary-General, Ahmed Alimat.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, Al-Najjar reviewed a number of projects to be implemented in the water sector as part of the USAID’s continuous support programs for the water sector, aimed to enhancing the reality of water resources to improve their management, transport and distribution mechanisms, which cover drinking and irrigation purposes, challenges of reducing water losses and slashing operation and maintenance costs.

The minister expressed Jordan’s appreciation for the “great” support provided by the U.S. government to face the Kingdom’s water challenges, especially in the water and energy sector.
