The Ministry of Water and Irrigation on Wednesday signed an agreement worth $40 million to implement the West Irbid Wastewater Project.
The project, funded with loans and grants by the European Union (EU) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), will construct a wastewater network to provide more than 200,000 residents in Irbid governorate, 70 kilometers north of Amman, with sanitation services.
In a statement, Water Minister Mohammed Najjar highlighted the efforts of the ministry and the Water Authority in improving wastewater infrastructure in the northern regions, and ensuring the sustainability of services in response to the influx of Syrian refugees.
“The project will kick off with 3 phases to serve 100,000 residents, while other phases will be offered at the beginning of next year,” he added.
Secretary General of the Water Authority Bashar Bataineh said that the project’s implementation will start immediately, as the first, second and third phases; worth $13.776 million, $11.891 million and $14.5 million respectively, will be completed within 23 months. “The remaining phases will serve 17 other areas in west of Irbid,” he indicated.
