UNESCO calls stronger ethical codes for AI

UNESCO Friday urged countries to implement its recommendation issued in 2021 to regulate AI after Elon Musk and hundreds of experts called for stopping the development of AI programmes for six months, warning of “great risks to humanity.”

“The world needs stronger ethics for AI, and this is the challenge we face today,” UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said in a statement.

The 193 UN member states unanimously approved in November 2021 the “first global normative framework for the ethical use of artificial intelligence,” which is a “road map for countries that describe how to make the most of the benefits of AI while minimising the risks arising from this technology,” according to UNESCO.

“The time has come to implement strategies and regulations at the national level, and we must turn words into action,” Azoulay said in a statement posted on UNESCO’s website.
