UN mourns Pele’s death

New York, The United Nations has expressed its “deep sorrow” over the death of Brazilian soccer player Pele, who had been a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF and a UNESCO Champion for Sport since 1994.

Pele was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the landmark United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, one of the first World Summits on Development and the Environment dedicated to a sustainable future.

“We are all with the people of Brazil in honouring the memory of a man who made millions of children dream across continents and generations,” said the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi,

UNESCO said Pele “worked relentlessly to promote sport as a tool for peace, and we will miss him greatly.”
