The UN-Habitat Jordan, in cooperation with the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM), launched a community awareness campaign on managing flashflood risks in downtown Amman, and promoting resilient infrastructure practices.

This campaign came as part of the “Strengthening the Social Stability and Resilience of Vulnerable Jordanian Communities and Syrian Refugees in Amman against Flash Floods” project, funded by the Japanese government, the national program coordinator for UN-Habitat Jordan Deema Abu Thiab said in a statement on Wednesday.

Abu Thiab indicated that the project evaluated the needs of the local community and refugees in floods, raised awareness on the danger of disasters, and identified priorities to implement the appropriate intervention to control and eliminate the risk of flooding, through using the “CityRAP” tool that has been developed by Habitat over the past ten years.

This project is in line with the Jordan National Natural Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy (2019-2022), where flash floods were identified as the second priority with maximum hazard of all risks.
