The Amman Court of First Instance Wednesday sentenced three public service employees to two years of temporary hard labor over allowing the entry of pistachio and coffee that were “not fit for human consumption” into the Kingdom.
Of the 27 charged in the case, the court found that the three defendants had transferring the foodstuffs through the green channel instead of the red one in the Aqaba Special Economic Zone. The red/green/yellow channels is a customs classification system that prevents the entry of prohibited, controlled or low-grade goods into the Kingdom.
The court said that the defendants’ actions caused JD56,000 worth of damages to the state treasury, ordering them to pay the full amount in compensatory damages, in addition to the administrative and judicial expenses resulting from the case.
