Amman: The Anti-Narcotics Department (AND) personnel arrested members of a criminal network that counterfeited a number of the recently introduced JD50 banknotes, and attempted to exchange them in number of shops, the Public Security Directorate (PSD) spokesperson said Friday.
Police were tipped off on unknown persons who deal with fake JD50 banknotes with a number of shops in the Balqa governorate, Amman, and the Rusaifa District, the PSD spokesperson explained.
He added that investigative teams in a number of AND departments investigated the case to track and arrest the suspects.
The investigations and information gathering led the investigators to suspect four people, all of whom were arrested inside a vehicle in Amman and an apartment, and they seized 184 counterfeit banknotes worth JD9,200 and an amount of narcotic substances, the PSD spokesperson noted.
During the interrogation, the suspects admitted that they had received these counterfeit banknotes from the main counterfeiter in the Aqaba governorate and went to Amman and the central and Aqaba governorates to promote that banknotes, as they took advantage of the limited exchange of the new banknotes among traders and their lack of knowledge of it well, despite its poor counterfeiting.
Police in the city of Aqaba raided the location of the main counterfeiter and arrested him. The police seized inside the place a number of counterfeit banknotes, printers, inks, laptops, and equipment used to counterfeit the banknotes. the PSD spokesperson further added
The PSD spokesperson said that all the suspects will be referred to the State Security Court’s Public Prosecutor.
He urged the public to validate the banknotes before receiving and exchange them, especially as they are easy to discover due to the poor method of counterfeiting.
He also called for directly reporting any case of banknotes suspicion via 911 emergency number.
