Senate’s Finance, Economy Committee meets head of IMF mission
Amman, The Senate’s Finance and Economy Committee, headed by Senator Umayya Toukan, on Thursday met with Martin Cerisola, head of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) mission to Jordan,
The IMF mission is currently visiting the Kingdom, to assess and review of the performance of Jordanian economy’s key indicators in the current year.
Cerisola spoke about positive aspects in the Jordanian economy’s performance, specifically in the tourism sector, exports and the cooperation with Iraq.
He said challenges remain with regard to increasing the economic growth rate, and creating jobs to reduce unemployment rates, stressing the need to complete structural reforms in the energy and labor sectors.
The IMF official stressed the importance of focusing the energy sector and the need to implement the “road map” to address the indebtedness of the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and ensure the fairness of electricity tariffs between all sectors.
Cerisola added that the IMF delegation’s discussions with various stakeholders in the Jordanian government are continuing on the future cooperation with the IMF when the current program is completed during the first quarter of next year.
