Portuguese President Honors HRH Princess Rym Ali
Lisbon, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has honored HRH Princess Rym Ali for her efforts in the field of culture and cultural exchange.
Her Highness received the “Order of Prince Henry the Navigator” at the conclusion of the International Conference on Higher Education in Emergencies organized by the Rapid Response Mechanism platform at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon.
HRH Princess Reem, founder of the Jordan Media Institute, spoke about the challenges facing refugees and displaced people who wish to pursue their higher education, as well as obstacles in host countries and societies.
“The rate of higher education among non-refugee populations worldwide is 36 per cent, but only one in every 100 refugees has the opportunity to pursue higher education,” she said.
“At a time when the world is witnessing the largest displacement in human history, investing in helping displaced people to achieve their potential through higher education has economic benefits that help host communities,” said Princess Rym.
On the role of refugees and displaced persons in post-war reconstruction, she said that “they will benefit their communities instead of being burdened with them, away from the wrong attitude towards them, and this will also pave the way for the reconstruction of their countries if they can return.” She emphasized that equal opportunities to pursue higher education on the basis of merit is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, so it is not luxury and must include human values regardless of the area of specialization.
In translating the words into action, HRH Princess Rym announced that the Jordan Media Institute has decided to extend a scholarship to a refugee on condition that the required standards are met. This step is a significant contribution because the annual batch of students admitted to the study of the MA in journalism program does not exceed thirty students so that the Institute can focus on teaching the media with high quality.
