PM urges sufficient, affordable food supply ahead of Ramadan

Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh stressed on Wednesday the need to provide commodities at reasonable prices during the holy month of Ramadan and throughout the year. He made the remark during a meeting with representatives of the industrial, trade and agricultural sectors and the regulatory authorities and the military and civil consumer corporations ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, which is expected to start next Thursday. Khasawneh pointed to the important role that civilian and military consumer corporations, alongside the private sector, play in providing goods, commodities, and basic materials. “We are confident that we will meet all the basic needs of citizens at reasonable prices during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and throughout the year,” he assured. The prime minister lauded the role of the private sector as an essential partner in supporting citizens, especially over the past three years, during which the world suffered from the COVID-19 pandemic and the repercussions of the Russo-Ukrainian crisis that caused an imbalance in global supply chains and a price hike in foodstuffs and oil derivatives. Additionally, the public-private partnership has also enabled Jordan to withstand these consecutive events, maintain acceptable inflation rates, aid citizens, meet their needs for basic materials, and maintain a safe, adequate and affordable strategic stock, the premier added. He highlighted the government’s approach of making the private sector its partner to achieve its goals and role in serving citizens and advance the ambitious agenda adopted by His Majesty King Abdullah II within the framework of the laws and regulations governing and the national responsibility entrusted to all of us. Recognizing that role, Khasawneh said the government will spare no effort to empower the private sector to serve citizens. The prime minister underscored the role of the regulatory authorities in cracking down on exaggeration in prices that may affect citizens’ livelihoods. He also stressed the role of health agencies in monitoring the quality of foodstuffs and beverages in accordance with the highest standards. The officials who attended the meeting highlighted the measures taken to follow through with the premier’s instructions, underlining that commodities will be available to citizens at affordable prices.
