Pharmaceutical industry contributes 7pct to GDP

Jordan’s thriving pharmaceutical industry contributes about 7 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with exports exceeding $700 million annum, making it the second largest exporting sector, according to an industry official.

With that in mind, Jordan is considered the only Arab country which exports pharmaceuticals more than it imports, President of the Jordanian Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, Maher Kurdi, told Petra on Sunday.

Kurdi stressed that the quality of the Jordanian medicine is equal to foreign medicines, and is subject to the same control as imported medicines, calling on the government to reconsider the economic stimulus packages, so that the pharmaceutical sector is included in the package of tax rebates with a rate of 3 percent on exports.
