Palestinian FM demands fact-finding mission over Al-Aqsa excavations

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday called on the international community to assume its responsibility and stop Israeli excavations under the Al Aqsa Mosque and in the Old City in occupied Jerusalem.

In a statement, the ministry called for a fact-finding mission to investigate the excavations, which, it said are a war crime under the international law for which Israeli officials should be held to account.

The statement said that the “catastrophic” impact of the excavations particularly appear in winter when cracks are seen in the homes and shops of local Palestinians as a result of rainwater that leaks into them or inundate them as was evident yesterday at the Chain Gate in the Old City.

The ministry said that the ongoing excavations in East Jerusalem by the occupation authority are part of the Israeli scheme to change the historical and legal status quo and forcefully impose its narrative by forging existing historical monuments.
