NCHR calls for protection of rights of elderly

The National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) on Saturday called for the protection and promotion of the rights of the elderly, through legislation that guarantees their rights and takes into account their special needs.

“It is necessary to provide a secure retirement future for the elderly through the social security umbrella and incorporate them into necessary health care, including home care and providing medical cadres with geriatricians,” it said in a statement to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The NCHR pointed to challenges and problems related to “this category, which requires the cooperation of all entities to enhance the reality of the elderly”, calling for updating strategic plans with the necessary mechanisms to enhance and protect them in light of cultural, economic and social changes.

It called for ensuring the right to a suitable standard of living for the old people, including adequate food and decent housing that preserves their human dignity, and setting up centers for the elderly to spend their time and enhance their mental and physical health.
