National youth congress to convene this year to draft youth charter

Amman, Minister of Culture and Youth Mohammad Abu Rumman said Saturday that a national youth congress will be held later this year to draw up a national youth charter and a vision for Jordanian youth for 2020.

Abu Rumman said in a press statement on Saturday that a Higher Committee formed to draft the National Charter for Youth, which comprises experts in youth affairs and elite Jordanian youth, discussed at a meeting today its future work mechanisms and key topics.

He said that the ministry made a ‘qualitative leap’ in enhancing the role of youth and their participation in public affairs in partnership with the relevant institutions through a series of programs, the latest of which was the Youth Leadership Network, which constituted a youth action framework at the level of governorates.

It comprises a group of youth leaders and activists in the governorates that seeks to enhance the youth’s developmental role and empower them to contribute to the advancement of the youth sector in their own regions.

The Higher Committee’s role is to define the key aspects required in the youth charter, and then the formation of a subcommittee to meet youth representatives in the various sectors, particularly youth organisations and networks in the governorates, Committee Chairman Muhannad Mubaideen said.

He pointed out that the panel’s function will go in parallel and simultaneously with the formation of youth councils and networks in the governorates, which lay the framework of youth action and develop thoughts, mechanisms and organisation to arrive at a youth vision in the governorates.

Members of the committee put forward proposals and perspectives on a number of youth issues, which can be incorporated into the charter.
