His Majesty King Abdullah on Wednesday said modernising the political system is part of a package of reforms that also encompasses the administrative and economic sectors, and requires hard work and collective efforts to achieve tangible results.
At a meeting held at Al Husseiniya Palace with former prime ministers and ministers, King Abdullah said the Royal Committee to Modernise the Political System has concluded its mandate, but its recommendations alone are not enough, stressing the need to build on what has been achieved to implement comprehensive programmes that promote the public’s engagement in decision-making.
His Majesty stressed the statesmen’s important role in encouraging Jordanians’ political and partisan engagement, in order to ensure the success of political modernisation.
The King said the rule of law is the cornerstone of any country’s prosperity and stability, noting that Jordan embarks on its second centennial with strong institutions and a pivotal regional role.
His Majesty commended Jordanians’ awareness and unity, adding that Jordan has often been targeted after political achievements at the domestic and external levels.
The King also touched upon a number of domestic, regional, and international concerns.
For their part, the attendees called for awareness campaigns to promote political and partisan engagement, stressing the importance of developing the education sector and devising an economic plan to counter poverty and unemployment.
They also expressed support for His Majesty’s steadfast positions on Arab issues, foremost of which is the Palestinian cause.
Present at the meeting were former prime ministers Taher Masri, Abdur-Rau’f Rawabdeh, Adnan Badran, Abdullah Ensour, and Hani Mulki, as well as former ministers Khaled Al Karaki, Marwan Muasher, and Nasser Judeh.
Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, Director of the Office of His Majesty Jafar Hassan, and General Intelligence Department Director Maj. Gen. Ahmad Husni attended the meeting.
