Jordan National Rehabilitation Strategic Plan 2020-2024 launched

The Ministry of Health on Tuesday launched the National Rehabilitation Strategic Plan 2020-2024 in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Jordan and “Humanity and Inclusion” (HI), an INGO.

HRH Prince Mired Bin Raad, President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (HCD), said the strategy is an important and necessary step towards framing and governance of rehabilitation services and subjecting them to quality standards and impact measurement.

He emphasized that persons with disabilities must be partners in any effort aimed at evaluating and improving the services they receive, asserting that inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities will ensure that they are able to exercise their rights and reach optimal functioning and independence.

He underlined the importance of the maximum investment in the physical and sensory capabilities of persons with disabilities, the optimal use of assistive products, and the full use of assistive technology in line with the law and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, in order to establish an integrated system of services that includes diagnosis and rehabilitation programs and clear and effective referral mechanisms.

For his part, Minister of Health Firas Hawari stressed that the ministry has been playing a leading role in providing rehabilitation services in most public hospitals and clinics, revealing that the ministry has approved a plan to set up a national center that will serve as an umbrella platform for rehabilitation services.

He pointed out that the ministry was able, despite the exceptional and difficult circumstances triggered by the coronavirus pandemic, to maintain the continuity and quality of health services provided to everyone living in the Kingdom.

Hala Sakr, a technical officer at the WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean specializing in violence, injuries and disabilities, referred to the organization’s support for Jordan in its efforts to achieve the “Rehabilitation 2030: A Call to Action” initiative launched by the World Health Organization to support the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities.

She indicated that Jordan was one of the first countries in the region to adopt the tools of the WHO to develop national rehabilitation strategies, and stressed that the Kingdom’s experience in this regard “is a model example”.

Federico Dessi, Head of Mission/ Country Director at Humanity and Inclusion (HI), indicated that the organization has, since the start of its operations in Jordan, played a major role in supporting Syrian refugees and providing them with quality health services, especially in the field of rehabilitation.

He pointed out that the INGO has supported the strategy since its early stages of development, and that it will continue to provide support through appropriate frameworks to ensure the implementation of the strategy.

Ali Al-Rjoub, physical medicine, and rehabilitation physician and the strategy’s liaison officer, reviewed the main stages of the strategy’s development process, and described the plan as agile and actionable and built on clear measurable goals.
