Jordan is determined to support UNRWA issue says FM
Amman, Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs Ayman Safadi said Jordan is determined to exert every effort towards the issue of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
During a Foreign Affairs parliamentary committee’s meeting on Tuesday, Safadi added that these efforts were proactive and under His Majesty King Abdullah’s directives, stressing the need to resolve the financial crisis and mobilize international political and financial support to the UN agency.
The meeting, chaired by MP Raed Khaza’leh, was held to discuss the latest developments on the Palestinian issue and cutting the funding to UNRWA.
He pointed out that while the US announced the cessation of its support for the UNRWA, many countries intensified their financial and political support for the agency, which allowed it to continue delivering educational, health and aid services.
The foreign minister indicated that Jordan called for an Arab foreign ministers’ meeting to discuss ways of supporting the UNRWA. He added that the Kingdom will organize in cooperation with Sweden, Japan, the European Union and Turkey a conference on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this month to discuss means of securing the necessary funding for the agency.
MP Khaza’leh lauded Jordan’s efforts in defending the Palestinian issue and mobilizing international political and financial support to the UNRWA.
