Jordan-GCC forum recommends Jordan as food security observatory

An economic forum that began on Tuesday in Amman has emphasized the importance of a green agricultural path to facilitate the flow of goods as well as food security between Jordan and member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The Jordan-GCC Economic Forum also encouraged the exchange of expertise and technologies, as well as the use of Jordan as a strategic and regional observatory for food security in order to mitigate the effects of crises, serve the region’s countries, and provide an infrastructure for emergency supplies.

Jordan Chamber of Commerce Chairman Nael Kabariti said on Wednesday that the forum recommended taking advantage of the vast space that electronic trade provides for business people, holding meetings and commercial deals to maintain communication, and increasing technology sharing to increase investment and marketing to desired levels.

In their recommendations, attendees emphasized the importance of discussing solar energy cooperation aspects and directing Gulf investment toward sustainable energy projects, in addition to working on a renewable energy interconnection project.

According to Kabariti, the forum encouraged investments in promising Jordanian sectors such as tourism, medical tourism, mining, financing, banking, logistics, infrastructure, and agriculture, as well as leveraging Jordan’s government incentives such as trade deals, modern laws, tax breaks, and custom exemptions.

The forum encouraged women’s economic participation by signing memorandums of understanding between Jordanian and Gulf business women. It also established a platform for online communication for young entrepreneurs.

Kabariti cited the forum’s call for creating a business incubator to oversee the initiatives of Jordanian and Gulf businessmen, establishing a consulting firm to look at the concepts of Arab youth, facilitating transportation between the two parties, and creating an online platform to share investment and economic opportunities and events.

The forum emphasized the need for governments to move forward with interconnection projects, particularly those involving joint transportation, in order to boost trade exchange and cut costs. It also called for the establishment of an investment system based on the build-operate-transfer (BOT) model.

The Jordan Chamber of Commerce organized the third Jordan-GCC Economic Forum, titled “New Horizons for Economic and Investment Cooperation,” in collaboration with the Federation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Chambers and with the support of the Gulf Cooperation Council Secretariat General.
