German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas on Monday said that the international community misjudged the situation in Afghanistan, where the Taliban quickly seized power following the withdrawal of foreign forces.
“There is nothing more to say. We all, the government, the intelligence services, the international community, underestimated the situation in Afghanistan, where the world was shocked to see scenes of thousands of Afghans trying to flee the country,” German news agency Deutsche Welle quoted the minister as saying.
“Following the withdrawal of foreign forces, we were certainly not in a position to assess that the Afghan armed forces were not ready to confront the Taliban,” the minister noted.
“It was a miscalculation on our part and we will definitely talk about it,” he added, expressing his desire to draw the lessons and consequences of this whole matter.
