IBSA General Assembly meetings kick off at Dead Sea

Activities of 2021 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) General Assembly kicked off on Sunday, at the Dead Sea, with the participation of 31 countries.

In a press statement, Chairman of the Jordanian Paralympic Committee (JPC), Hussein Abu Al-Ruz, affirmed the IBSA’s confidence in Jordan’s ability to host major conferences.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Abu Al-Ruz, in the presence of the IBSA’s President, Jannie Hammershoi, said the Dead Sea meetings constitute the first event held by JPC after the “historic” achievement made in Tokyo Paralympic by winning 4 gold and one bronze medals.

Abu Al-Ruz congratulated the IBSA on the 40th anniversary of its founding in 1981, the year that also witnessed the birth of the first Jordanian Federation for the Sports of the Disabled.

Hammershoi, for her part, praised Jordan for hosting the IBSA’s meetings, which constitute an “important” turning point in the march of blind sport.

Hammershoi also congratulated the “remarkable” achievements made by the Jordanian Paralympic Committee in the previous stage.

Hammershoi stressed the IBSA’s keenness to follow up on the newly-proposed mechanism to hold the Paralympic goalball qualifiers, which would help hold Asian runoff competitions in various geographical areas, paving way for the two winning teams to qualify for the Paralympics matches.

In addition to Jordan, the Dead Sea meetings saw participation of 5 Arab countries: Egypt, Iraq, Kuwait, the UAE, and 26 other countries, according to the JPC statement.
