House speaker meets Iraqi FM

Amman, Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament , Atef Tarawneh, said Jordan will maintain its support for Iraq to restore its security and to achieve its people’s aspirations.

During his meeting with Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and his accompanying delegation on Monday, Tarawneh stressed the importance of joint cooperation in the field of investment, exchange of economic expertise, and efforts to counter terrorism and extremism.

On the local arena, Tarawneh highlighted the Kingdom’s reform process amid regional upheavals, and said ” we have carried out constitutional, economic and legislative reforms, which helped us shun volatilities in the Middle East”.

He said the two countries have common aspirations to enhance economic cooperation and to rejuvenate trade movement, and stressed the need to develop coordination mechanisms in fighting terrorism at the ideological, security and media levels, in a bid to give the region’s generations an opportunity to live in security and stability.

He expressed appreciation for the Iraqi government’s decision to exempt Jordanian goods from customs fees, stressing the importance of increasing the trade movement through the border Trebil crossing.

Al-Jaafari, for his part, said the Iraqis will not forget the “sincere and brave” stances of His Majesty King Abdullah in his support to Iraq during its war against the terrorist Daesh gang.

The Jordanian vision in the war on terrorism was “advanced,” said the minister, and noted Iraq looks forward to further cooperation and coordination in the war on terrorism, al-Jaafari noted.
