Health minister partakes in WHO regional committee meetings

Minister of Health Firas Hawari participated in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) 69th session of the Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, which started on Monday in Cairo.

During preparation meetings at WHO’s Regional Office, Hawari discussed with his counterparts and health representatives from other countries proposals that will be raised during the meeting, in which WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and a number of health ministers from the Middle East took part.

The preparation sessions included a number of key topics on the global health agenda in light of regional and global crises and pandemics, namely Covid-19, which required participatory and national strategies to address, such as vaccines, protective measures and boosting the health sector’s capacity.

On the sidelines of the session, Hawari and WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean Ahmed Al Mandhari tackled health cooperation prospects, emphasizing the timing of the meeting to review strategies to deal with diseases and pushing for increasing the production of vaccines in the Middle East.

Over the course of five days, the committee will hold elections of the WHO regional office, discuss cooperation during emergencies in the Middle East, new global health strategies, applying the One Health Approach in the region, among other issues.
