Global Land Forum forest launched to push national afforestation drive

Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Hneifat, on Sunday launched a campaign to plant Global Land Forum (GLF) forest in Ardah area in the central Balqa governorate, in the presence of the Ambassador / Head of the European Union Delegation in Jordan, Maria Hadjitheodosiou.

The planting event comes in preparation for launching GLF’s activities, which are organized periodically every 3 years by International Earth Alliance (ILC)- the largest coalition working on land rights in the world, according to a Ministry of Agriculture statement.

Hneifat announced Jordan is scheduled to host the GLF’s ninth edition, in partnership with the European Union, which will be held over a 4-day period, starting May 23 to 26 in the Dead Sea region.

To push the drive, Hneifat said Jordan’s national afforestation plan aims to expand the green area in most governorates and the production capacity in the Ministry of Agriculture’s nurseries has been raised to 5 million trees.

These efforts are supported by a sustainability plan to invest treated water in irrigating forest trees, he noted, highlighting partnerships with international organizations to support these projects, which help the plan to deal with climate change.

Through the GLF, Jordan is looking forward to “large” international cooperation in improving and developing ways of cooperation to expand the green area and transfer expertise among the participating countries, he noted.

This event, he said, supports youth and rural women’s communication with afforestation projects.
