Garments imports down 27pct in Q1 of 2019

Amman, Garments imports dropped by 27 percent in the first quarter of the current year coupled with a decline in sales, President of the Garments and Footwear Traders Association, Munier Deih said on Tuesday.

He told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) the garments and footwear industry has been suffering from accumulated challenges in the past period, mainly driven by customs fees amounting to about 50 percent, high rent, energy bill, high operating costs, electronic sales, exemptions granted to postal parcels and random licenses.

The Kingdom’s imports of garments fell to JOD153 million during 2018 compared to JOD174 million in 2017 and JOD192 million in 2016. The Kingdom’s imports of footwear also dropped to JOD39 million last year against JOD48 million in 2017 and JOD62 million in 2016.
