FM urges int’l community to remain engaged in Syrian refugee plight

Brussels, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi Thursday reiterated the need for the international community to remain engaged in supporting Jordan to help it fulfill the needs of 1.3 Syrian million refugees hosted by the Kingdom.

Addressing a Brussels-held conference dedicated to Syria, the top diplomat said investing in refugees and providing a decent living for them is they key to regional stability and security.

The minister, moreover, echoed the call to find a political solution the to the crisis in neighboring Syria, in accordance with the UN resolution 2254, that puts an end to the suffering of the Syrian people and enables the voluntary return of refugees to their homeland.

“Seven years ago, Jordan opened its borders to 1.3 million refugees fleeing the Syrian civil war and we shared them our schools, hospitals and labor market”, the minister told the third conference on “Supporting the future of Syria and the region” co-chaired by the EU and the UN.

What the Kingdom did, the minister said, is clearly the right thing to do, because it goes in harmony with the values and principles of the Jordanian people.
