FM urges Arab-Muslim action to counter Israeli PM’s annexation plans
Jeddah, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi has called for a firm Arab-Muslim action to condemn and counter a plan by the Israeli prime minister to annex Palestinian territory in the Jordan Valley and the northern Dead Sea.
Speaking at a meeting of the foreign ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah on Sunday, the foreign minister said the Israeli prime minister’s announcement is a condemned unilateral move and part of a systematic drive to establish the occupation and undermine prospects for a Palestinian state on pre-June 4, 1967 lines.
“Therefore, the Arab-Muslim response must be decisive and effective in addressing Israel’s attempts to impose new facts on the ground and undermine the chances of an independent Palestinian state,” Safadi told the meeting called for by Saudi Arabia.
Safadi stressed the need to take practical steps to confront the illegal Israeli policies and support the Palestinian brothers, calling for an Arab-Muslim effort at the United Nations Security Council to foil the Israeli prime minister’s scheme.
The minister also called for providing all necessary support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to thwart all attempts aimed at “killing the refugee issue and ending the agency’s role.”
“A clear position must be taken to confront Israel’s unprecedented violations of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and support the steadfastness of the Jerusalemites,” he said.
Safadi highlighted the Kingdom’s role in protecting Muslim and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem, noting that His Majesty King Abdullah II, the custodian over Muslim and Christian holy sites of Jerusalem, has been devoting utmost efforts to protect the holy shrines and preserve their Arab, Muslim and Christian identity.
“Sovereignty over occupied Jerusalem is Palestinian and custodianship over its sanctities is Hashemite, but the protection of Jerusalem and its sanctities is a Palestinian-Jordanian-Muslim responsibility,” Safadi said.
The foreign minister stressed that “there must be a clear position by all Muslim countries against every unilateral step taken by Israeli to further establish its occupation.”
Safadi warned that the condemned and rejected Israeli prime minister’s declaration undermines the foundations of the peace process, kills all chances of achieving comprehensive peace and pushes the region towards conflict.
“There will be no peace or security or stability without ending the occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state on Palestinian national territory, with Jerusalem as its capital in accordance with the resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab peace initiative,” the minister said.
