Safadi underlined that “preserving the legal and historical status quo, and protecting the Arab, Islamic and Christian identity of the holy sites is a supreme task that His Majesty King Abdullah, Custodian of these holy sites, devotes all of Jordan’s capabilities for, as protecting Jerusalem and the holy sites and preserving their identity is a condition for protecting peace opportunities.”

He noted that “the international community and the Security Council must assume their responsibilities and obligate Israel to respect the rights of the people of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in their homes. In accordance with international law and international humanitarian law, the Jerusalemites are treated as protected residents, and the displacement of the residents of the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood from their homes will be, according to international law, a war crime, and in accordance with Security Council Resolution No. 478 of 1980 as well, which states that the Israeli courts have no authority in occupied Jerusalem.”

“The occupation is the source of conflict and occupation is the basis of all evil. Occupation and peace are opposites that do not meet, and peace is achieved with the demise of the occupation, respect for the Palestinians’ right to a decent life in freedom and an independent and sovereign state, respect for international law and the implementation of the decisions of your honorable council, including Resolution No. 2334,” Safadi said.

He further added, “Neither overrunning Palestine nor the Palestinian cause will be allowed, for it is the basis of the conflict, and its solution is based on the two-state solution, which embodies the independent Palestinian state with sovereignty and occupied Jerusalem as its capital on the pre-June 4, 1967 borders in accordance with international law, international legitimacy decisions and the Arab Peace Initiative, is the only way to achieve the just and comprehensive peace that the region and all its peoples deserve.”

He added, “To achieve this, the international community must act immediately, a real horizon must be found and serious negotiations must be launched to end the occupation and achieve a just peace based on the two-state solution according to the approved references and on the basis of land for peace, which Israel undermines by trying to eliminate all opportunities to achieve a just and comprehensive peace.”

He said, “No time shall be wasted, the historical injustice that the Palestinian people are exposed to must end. This inhuman occupation must disappear, and our region must enjoy the security, stability and peace it deserves.”

In conclusion, he emphasized, “The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan will continue to work with all of you, as a force and a partner for a just and comprehensive peace that meets rights and is accepted by the peoples.”
