FM, Algerian counterpart talk joint cooperation, regional developments

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, and Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, on Sunday, held extensive talks on ways to strengthen brotherly bilateral relations in various fields, including economic, health, education, tourism and pharmaceutical industries, according to action plans agreed upon by the two sides.

Safadi and Lamamra reviewed steps and mechanisms for strengthening Jordanian-Algerian cooperation relations, and activating joint agreements and memoranda of understanding signed between the two countries, including the bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) signed in 1997, and the health accord, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.

The two ministers expressed aspiration to convene the 9th session of the Joint Jordanian-Algerian Committee this year, and agreed on the need to hold preparatory discussions in this regard, in addition to holding meetings that bring together the two countries’ various government partners and private sector to enhance cooperation, investment, trade exchange and encourage mutual tourism, the statement added.

The duo also went over a slew of regional issues, foremost is the Palestinian issue, and discussed efforts aimed at finding a “true” political horizon for resolving the Palestinian issue on the basis of the two-state solution, in accordance with international law, approved international references, and the Arab Peace Initiative, the statement pointed out.

In addition, the ministers discussed political efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and activate joint Arab action to ensure serving common Arab issues and interests. Moreover, the duo also spoke about recent developments in Libya and the Yemeni crisis.

For his part, Lamamra affirmed the “deep-rooted, solid” Jordanian-Algerian relations, lauding the Kingdom’s main role, under His Majesty King Abdullah II’s leadership, to consolidating the region’s security and stability.

Lamamra also referred to Algeria’s preparations for the upcoming 31st Arab summit, which will be held in Algiers. Meanwhile, Safadi wished it success.
