Fayez lauds Jordan’s ties with EU

Amman, Senate President, Faisal Fayez, said Jordan’s relations with the EU are “deep-rooted” in various fields, especially in the political and economic areas.

During his meeting Thursday with Maria Hadjitheodosiou, the EU Ambassador to Jordan, Fayez valued the EU’s stances in support of Jordan, especially in light of the difficult economic conditions it is facing today as a result of the region’s conflicts and of hosting around 1.3 million Syrian refugees.

He called on increasing the EU’s economic assistance to Jordan and to expand its investments, in addition to channeling direct support to the state Treasury to face the financial deficit, triggered by the Syrian refugee burden and the various refugee-related challenges.

In this context, he said Jordan has only received a quarter of the cost of hosting Syrian refugees from 2011 until the end of 2017, which increased its economic and living challenges, affected the citizens’ lives, and led to high budget deficit and public debt.

Fayez praised the EU’s support for just Arab issues, as well as its supportive position to His Majesty King Abdullah II in his efforts to achieve peace in the region, and his constant emphasis on the necessity of solving the Palestinian issue on the basis of a two-state solution and international legitimacy resolutions.

For her part, the EU envoy praised the “high” level of EU relations with Jordan, stressing the EU’s continued support for the Kingdom.

She praised Jordan’s humanitarian role towards the refugees, as well as His Majesty King Abdullah II’s efforts to revive the peace process, end the region’s conflicts, spread the culture of peace and to fight terrorism.

She pointed out that the European Union will sustain continuous coordination with Jordan on various issues of common interest.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed various challenges facing Jordan, regional issues, and the importance of the international community’s assistance to help it continue its role in serving refugees and achieving security and stability in the Middle East.
