The General Secretariat of the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO) marked, together with the international community, the International Day of Charity, which is observed on September 5 every year to promote the concepts of social responsibility and volunteerism, and to transform charitable work into a culture and behavior entrenched in societies.
ARCO Secretary-General Dr. Saleh bin Hamad Al-Tuwaijri stressed the importance of being charitable and thus helping lift those in need from a state of misery and poverty to the best possible condition, preserving human dignity and improving living conditions, entrenching the culture of volunteer work, giving and tolerance, carrying out health care programs, strengthening social ties and contributing to educating communities to help each other.
Al-Tuwaijri said that charitable work enhances the resilience of societies, reduces the effects of damage resulting from humanitarian crises, and supports public services in the fields of medical care, education, housing and child protection.
In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 5, International Charity Day, with the aim of raising awareness and motivating people and non-governmental organizations around the world to help others through volunteering and charitable activities.
