ACC calls on increasing Chinese investments in Jordan

Amman Chamber of Commerce (ACC)’s Board of Directors called on increasing Chinese investments in Jordan, in light of diverse opportunities available in many economic sectors.

During its meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Jordan, Chen Chuandong, on Sunday, the ACC stressed the need to increase Jordanian exports to the Chinese market.

The Kingdom’s exports to China amounted to about JD115 million during 2020, mainly in fertilizers, copper scrap and cotton clothing, compared to JD1.92 billion in imports, according to official data.

In a press statement on Sunday, the ACC highlighted the need to increase visits by delegations and trade missions after the drop in Covid-19 infections, as an “important” step to revive the two countries’ trade exchanges, praising the level of bilateral relations in various fields.

The ACC also noted the importance to benefit from “distinguished” Chinese expertise in the field of transferring modern technologies in the agricultural sector, information technology, electrical appliances, and possibility of providing scholarships for young people in the educational, vocational and technical training areas to get technical expertise.

The ACC called on facilitating granting entry visas for Jordanian merchants to China, mainly to those who who received the Chinese vaccine, “Sinopharma”.

ACC President, Khalil El Haj Tawfiq stressed the necessity of activating agreements and memoranda of understanding that were signed between the ACC and Chinese commerce, industrial chambers, foremost is China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.

There are 14 Chinese partners registered as ACC members from various commercial sectors, he noted, adding that China is Jordan’s third largest trading partner after the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Tawfiq stressed the need for a permanent exhibition of Chinese products in the Kingdom to serve traders and industrialists from Jordan, Palestine, Syria and Iraq, stressing ACC’s readiness to cooperate with Chinese authorities in this regard.

Tawfiq noted the need to launch contact between the ACC administration and the embassy, especially with regard to networking businesspeople, traders and industrialists in the two countries on a permanent basis and promoting commercial and investment opportunities available to serve common interests.

In turn, the envoy out that the Kingdom is an “important” economic partner for China, and “a safe and stable” country in the Middle East, which makes it a gateway for Chinese products to enter neighboring countries.

The envoy said his country has adopted a new policy regarding the requirement of granting visas to recipients of the “Sinopharma” vaccine to facilitate their entry to China.

On future action to enhance ties, the diplomat affirmed the embassy’s readiness to make more joint efforts with ACC to develop and enhance trade relations, achieve mutual interests and facilitate joint and “effective” cooperation with the embassy’s economic and commercial office.
