Aboul Gheit: Arab Peace Initiative the basis of solution to Arab-Israeli conflict
Arab League Secretary General Ahmad Aboul Gheit said Saturday that Arab countries are unanimous that the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative is the basis of any solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
He said in a statement that he made contacts with Arab states in the past days that showed that the Arab position is based on the need to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands as the aim that all Arab countries, without exception, aspire for.
The Arab league chief said that true, lasting, just and comprehensive peace remains a strategic option for the Arab countries, and that reaching full peaceful relations with Israel would only come when the Palestinian people gain their freedom and independence and their legitimate rights are restored.
He reiterated total Arab rejection of Israeli annexation plans and any unilateral measures or declarations to change the status of the lands under occupation, stressing that the Arabs will not recognize Israel’s annexation of occupied East Jerusalem.
